Maldives is located in Arabian Sea, part of the Indian ocean, It lies between latitudes 1°S and 8°N, and longitudes 72° and 74°E. The closest neighbor is India and Sri lanka with distance more than 1000 kms. It is an archipelago, majorly made of corals called Atolls. Around 26 atolls, in the form of chain, starting from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll in the north to the Addu City in the south form the Republic of Maldives. The geographical span of Maldives is around roughly 298 square kilometres (115 sq mi), which is among the smallest nations in the World and smallest Asian country, both by land area and population. The population of Maldives is  around 427,756 inhabitants. Also with respect to elevation, it is the lowest in the world, with average 1.5 meters above sea levels. Due to these natural limitations, Maldives suffers greatly from Global Warming and is estimated that by 2100, it will be totally uninhabitable. 


Demographically, the population of Maldives is less than a million, around 427,756.  Among which ethnically majority of them are Dhivehis i.e Maldivians. These same ethnicity is common in Lakshadweep island, which is part of India. Both, Maldives and Lakshadweep island have common language and cultures. Also, apart from Maldivians, small amount of Tamil population is assimilated in Maldives. 


The official religion of Maldives is Islam. Nearly 98 % population practised islam. It was introduced in 12th century by Arab traders and hence now is a Islamic country.The religion of Islam is so deeply ingrained, that it is mandatory for adherence to Islam for citizenship. Very small population of other religion is present, but these population is fluctuating as they usually come for commerce or visit purposes.



Male is the Capital city. It is also  the most populous city of Maldives with a population of 133,412. It is also called “ Kings Island”. Male is also one of most densely populated city in the world.One of the atolls with an area of 5.8 sq. kms. Administratively, the city consists of a central island, an airport island, and two other islands governed by the Malé City Council.

  Climate of Maldives

Maldives geographically lies in Tropical zone, which has direct impact upon the climate and have a Tropical Monsoon climate.It’s low elevation also has impact upon climate, maintaining hot and humid most of the year. Maldives has basically two season - Dry which is in November - April months. Other season is Wet, which is characterised by Rainfall, along with storms and winds which is from May - October. The best time to visit November and April, as during these seasons, between which December - March is peak season. During November - April, it is usually cold and pleasant climate. Whereas from May the monsoon season starts, which peaks during June and lasts till October. Maldives is greatly threatened by Climate Change and Global warming. Due to rising ocean levels, the land mass is getting submerged yearly, and the rate of submergence is getting high every year. Due to these effects, UN has declared that if present condition persisted of rising sea levels, the Maldives will become uninhabited till year 2100. This will result in loss of entire nations and relocation towards any other ground.Keeping in view to this, By 2020, Maldives plans to eliminate or offset all of its greenhouse gas emissions.

  Language of Maldives

The official language is Dhivehi. It is connected with ancient Sinhalese language. English is widely spoken as due to influence in international tourism and inflow of visitors. It is very easy for any foreigner tourists to get assistance in english language.
